The Manager, Tax & Compliance role is responsible for managing all business and employment taxation matters for a highly mobile workforce within a company currently undergoing an ambitious period of growth, both locally and globally.  The London office will include approximately 1000 employees by year-end including local general consulting and business support functions, regional and corporate employees.  This role includes the provision of technical tax support within the Finance department to the Payroll and Benefits team, Revenue team and Accounting team.  In doing so the role will work closely with both the Global Tax team and local Senior Finance Director and Senior Finance Managers responsible for Accounting, Revenue and Payroll, on all tax and statutory reporting for the London office entities.  They will ensure all Senior Managers understand and fulfil the compliance obligations within their roles, ensuring adequate processes and controls are in place, mitigating risk.  This role will be hands on, initially running all reporting in order to fully understand the business and how data is captured and reported by the various finance software systems. 


The Manager, Tax & Compliance will be responsible for ensuring the above is executed to the highest possible standard, looking for continual process improvements as the company continues to grow, reporting directly to the Senior Finance Director.

The successful candidate should have at least 5+ year’s financial experience, be a qualified accountant (ACA, CTA or equivalent).  The position requires a detail-oriented person who can process numerical information with speed and accuracy. The candidate must have an ability to work to strict deadlines together with the ability to communicate professionally with all levels of staff both internally and externally, and show a flexible attitude to their workload.  They will be able to effectively manage and prioritise multiple tasks and problem solve along the way, working collaboratively with their peers.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Employee cross border working – taxation and social security

Responsible for all tax and social security implications of all cross border working, including, but not limited to:

  • Primary point of contact for all employee queries regarding tax implications of cross border working, including formal inter-office transfers and other circumstances
  • Appendix 4: Short Term Business Visitor Reporting: Oversee tracking of all STBVs to the UK via regular updates with PD, Staffing and HR team and liaise with Reception team to identify all visitors
  • Oversee A1/ Certificate of Coverage applications
  • Providing guidance and support to Senior Payroll Manager for International payroll, including shadow payroll calculations and offsets of Foreign payroll taxes paid
  • Liaising with Bain’s designated professional services firm for Personal Tax Returns of all authorised transfers, providing all compensation data and responding to all queries in a timely manner
  • Payment of balances due on tax returns where the liability is Bain’s responsibility and coordination of refunds owing to Bain
  • Tracking all tax loans and working with individuals to minimise Bain’s exposure to unpaid loans
  • Monitoring staff working overseas for Permanent Establishment risks and overseeing any non-UK shadow payrolls that may be required to meet Bain’s legal obligations, working with external advisors as required
  • Act as main point of contact for Global Tax Team and Global Mobility Team and all other offices
  • Review all draft transfer agreements as required for tax related matters
  • Liaise with other departments as required e.g. HR/ PD / Global Mobility

Payroll & benefits tax reporting

  • Provide support to Senior Payroll Manager on technical matters as required
  • Responsible for HMRC reporting for all entities, including, but not limited to:
    • Appendix 4: Short Term Business Visitor reporting
    • Appendix 5: Net of Foreign Tax Credit reporting
    • Appendix 7b: Modified National Insurance reporting
    • PAYE Settlement Agreement
    • P11Ds
  • The above includes full review of detailed analyses and preparation of final submissions
  • Perform a quarterly review of taxable benefit reporting for P11D & PSA consolidation
  • Responsible for monthly reconciliation and payment of PAYE, NIC, Student Loan and Apprenticeship Levy to HMRC and to the relevant overseas tax authorities as required
  • Responsible for Irish payroll reporting when applicable, collating data and working with PwC to ensure Irish payroll is prepared and filed timely
  • Primary point of contact for any HMRC enquiries on employment tax matters including regular PAYE audits
  • Ensure Pension auto-enrolment and re-enrolment compliance is completed
  • Review annual US reporting of employee benefits sent to Corporate Head Office
  • Review the monthly UK payrolls alongside the Senior Finance Director
  • Manage the monthly pension meeting and bi-annual pension Governance Committee, working with external pension advisers and the Regional CFO, driving actions as required
  • Work with the Senior Finance Director to ensure IR35 compliance, advise and implement the necessary processes as required to comply with any new legislation
  • Advise on the implementation of new salary sacrifice benefit schemes under consideration


Compensation Review and Analysis

  • Review annual comp sheets prepared by Finance Analyst
  • Liaise with Expert Programme Team for their annual compensation process
  • Liaise with all overseas offices to ensure the correct payment of bonuses to be split across locations as accrued and the correct tax treatment via a shadow payroll for appropriate payroll month if required
  • Prepare analysis for annual Gender Pay Gap Reporting and other adhoc reporting requirements 


Business Taxation

  • Prepare Corporation Tax returns for Bain UK, FRWD and any other jurisdiction where the UK business establishes a Permanent Establishment (currently Ireland), working with Global Tax and the Company’s designated professional adviser in all aspects of this.
  • Prepare the annual Corporation Tax provision workbook for Global Tax for all jurisdictions where the UK business has a tax obligation, currently London, FRWD and Ireland PE
  • Review and manage quarterly tax reporting for Corporate Head Office
  • Review and submit quarterly VAT returns
  • Responsible for all monthly VAT payments to HMRC and all Corporation Tax payments to HMRC and the relevant overseas tax authorities as applicable
  • Initial point of contact for any HMRC queries on VAT and Corporation Tax matters, including regular VAT audits, liaising with Global Tax team as appropriate
  • Work with Global Tax team on UK inputs for Country by Country reporting and any other international tax reporting requirements e.g. Diverted Profit Tax, Hybrid mismatch rules
  • Review and update Annual Tax Strategy statement with Global Tax before publishing annually
  • Be the main point of contact for the Global Tax Team for all Business Taxes
  • Be the main point of contact for the London Finance team for all Business Tax related matters


Statutory and Financial Reporting

  • Responsible for Statutory Reporting for several UK entities including but not limited to:
    • Financial Statements
    • Companies House Annual Filings
    • Statutory filing in any jurisdiction where the UK business has a legal requirement
  • Perform regular review of balance sheet account reconciliations, ensuring no aged items which could impact financial reporting and that open actions are addressed on a timely basis
  • Assist with statutory audits as required
  • Maintain Local Office Registration System(LORS) with each filing submission



  • Support the London Senior Finance Director on ad-hoc projects as required
  • Identify and implement improvements to current processes, working closely with Senior Finance Managers, particularly as new benefits/initiatives are introduced with a tax reporting consequence
  • Proactively keep informed of latest developments and relevant tax legislation
  • Assist with COA mapping for new SAP Cloud implementation due by 2023, specifically updating local tax reporting process documentation

Qualifications / Experience



  • Qualified Accountant (ACA, CTA or equivalent)
  • Experience of Expat taxation and cross border working essential
  • Strong tax accounting skills and technical knowledge
  • Highly numerate, with a comfort and confidence in dealing with large data sets and an ability to sense check numerical output
  • Advanced Excel skills, with proven ability to prepare accurate analyses
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to converse succinctly both verbally and in writing with senior management
  • Commercially aware to assess “what is best for the business” whilst providing solutions to any tax-related issues that arise
  • Ability to create impact and encourage participation
  • Education to degree standard 



  • Experience of working in a professional services, ideally management consulting environment in a multinational organisation
  • Prior knowledge of SAP Cloud as we migrate by 2023
