As an integral part of Bain’s Performance Improvement (PI) Practice, the Cost Transformations team addresses the need to link strategy with cost management across various client situations, from high urgency to building a vision with executive alignment.  The team serves corporate and private equity clients across all industries globally.


The Cost Transformations team works with Bain’s clients to conduct diagnostics on their spend base, establish an aligned-upon ambition, develop strategies to reach full-potential savings and institute programmatic transformation programs. We help our clients evolve their cost management strategy to fuel and fund their overarching strategy. 


Bain is investing to accelerate the growth of the Cost Transformations team over the coming years.  This role is part of an ambitious growth plan that will significantly expand our Cost Transformations-affiliated consulting resources.





Bain & Company is looking to recruit a Consultant based in North America and/or Europe with Cost experience for our “Value Calculator” team, which focuses on Cost Diagnostics.  The position will focus on helping our clients identify cost savings opportunities in all parts of their P&L. The position will include supporting clients in assessing the client’s cost base, identifying areas of value using benchmarks and Bain experience, and developing instances of the Value Calculator, our diagnostic software to visualize the opportunity for client executives.


This individual will likely come from a consulting or finance organization with a deep focus on financial data analysis and/or cost strategy, and will have a track record of successfully diagnosing issues, creating hypotheses and executing analyses that have moved the client to action.


The Cost Transformations Practice and Value Calculator team are fully integrated within the structure, culture and product offering of Bain and is not a separate product/service organization.


The general scope of the role will include approximately 80% of time focused on client diagnostics, performed remotely, with the remaining 20% focused on Cost Transformations capability building and tool development. The position will have a global focus. While not expected to be heavy, this role may include some travel to support our clients.





This is a role with a broad set of responsibilities. You will contribute to the (a) deployment, (b) development, and (c) commercialization of Bain’s Value Calculator approach. As such, you will have an opportunity to work with the entire span of Bain’s resources – from offshore analytics experts (deployment) to software developers and graphic design experts (development) to Senior Partners (commercialization). You will work closely with client facing teams and may also can work directly with client resources in collecting data and refining our analysis when required.


  • Deployment
    1. Manage and execute the ongoing deployments of the Value Calculator by executing financial analysis on our clients’ data
    2. Oversee a team of analytics experts in Bain’s offshore Cost Centre of Excellence who perform much of the analysis on a day-to-day basis
    3. Interact with the senior Bain leaders running the cases or proposals that are using the Value Calculator, helping them to understand the strategic implications of the analysis being performed and how it fits into the “answer” for their case
    4. Help prepare the case teams and account teams to present the output to client executives, explaining the size-of-prize hypothesis and, more broadly, how the analysis demonstrates a Cost program’s ability to deliver shareholder value
    5. Interact directly with client resources where data clarifications are required


  • Development
    1. Support the Manager / Senior Manager / Associate Partner in managing the development roadmap for the Value Calculator, including the future-state vision for the tool (1, 2, and even 5 years in the future).
    2. Partner with senior Bain technology resources in sprints to improve the software and visualizations to enhance the tool
    3. Work with internal teams (both Cost Transformation and industry/sector) and the Benchmarking Centre of Excellence to identify and close gaps in our benchmarking datasets and capabilities
    4. Work with internal teams to identify and close gaps in the documentation of Bain’s expertise and experience, to better support cost diagnostics


  • Commercialization
    1. Working with the Cost Transformations team and supporting the Manager, manage the pipeline for the Value Calculator to demonstrate the value of the tool to account teams, case teams, and client teams
    2. Continue to refine the model for how VC can drive commercial momentum for Cost Transformations and the PI practice as a whole:
      1. How to “sell” to internal stakeholders
      2. How to work with proposal teams to drive the right level of insight/outcome
  • How to present our digital capabilities to client teams
  1. Etc.


The successful Specialist Consultant candidate will have a track record of successful financial data analysis leading to strategic insights. Software development or experience executing cost transformations in a consulting-environment is a nice-to-have. Experience working with global clients or organizations is a plus.


Technical Expertise

  • Proven financial analysis capabilities, with a familiarity of company general ledgers, balance sheets, and income statements
  • Ability to lead a small team in executing business analysis
  • Ability to work closely with other cross-specialty internal support teams and resources

       Nice to have technical expertise:

      • Experience in executing Cost Transformations (corporate, consulting, or private equity)
      • Experience in the development and deployment of digital tools / software
      • Knowledge of and experience working with Finance function
      • Experience using tools to analyze and visualize large data sets (e.g. Alteryx, Tableau)


Commercial Acumen

  • Ability to build strong and collaborative relationships both inside and outside of Bain
  • Strong presence in meetings and high caliber communications skills. ‘Holds own’ with Finance and Cost experts
  • Broad understanding of business strategy, organization and capability development issues and answers across industry and functional domains
  • Experience supporting client and internal team workshops and brainstorms

        Nice to have commercial acumen:

  • Experience working with large-scale clients
