Bain’s Global Engineering leads the firm’s software development efforts and defines engineering standards for Bain globally. The team ships software solutions to address client and internal needs, ranging from iterative prototypes to enterprise-grade production software.



You’ll lead and manage our San Francisco Development Lab to deliver web and mobile applications for our clients, delighting their customers and improving their employee experience. You’ll do so by recruiting, retaining and motivating a high-performing team of flexible engineers who will use techniques and frameworks you assist them with to deliver quality work at speed. In addition, you’ll serve as part of the engineering expert community within Bain, guiding standards and advising both colleagues and clients on best practices and how best to address specific situations.

  • This position will be located in our San Francisco office
  • Travel may be required to client sites or internal meetings on occasion (in general not more than once a month for a few days at most)

Lead and manage Bain’s San Francisco Development Lab

  • Serve as a coach and mentor to the engineering team
  • Support Global Engineering leadership as well as members of other Bain teams in developing IP around modern engineering practices and how they can be best implemented within client businesses, bringing hands-on knowledge and expertise
  • Develop the organizational design and career development for the team, working with peers and colleagues globally to share best practices
  • Lead recruiting and onboarding team members
  • Directly manage 4 - 6 team members, with a mix of individual contributor engineers and first-line managers (so overall team of 8 - 12)
  • Set standards and guidelines for team to develop re-usable common frameworks, model and components that address repeatable tasks
  • Champion next generation software architecture strategies
  • Facilitate broader global engineering recruitment and cross region interactions

Codification & improvement of engineering processes

  • Explore new technical innovations in the web and mobile application space, such as new frameworks, libraries, design patterns and development tools
  • Guide teams on how to work within Global Engineering standards and playbooks, extending and improving them as appropriate.
  • Advise and coach engineering teams on technology stack best practices.
  • Design and develop frameworks to ensure high efficiency of our engineering teams e.g. starter projects, development processes and flows

Provide technical guidance to external clients and internal stakeholders in Bain

  • Explore new technical innovations in the machine learning and data engineering to improve customer results.
  • Advise and coach engineering teams on technology stack best practices and operational models to raise their DevOps capabilities



We are looking for someone who has:

  • Strong computer science fundamentals in core programming paradigms (object-oriented, functional etc.), data structures, systems design, automated testing, and performance implications of different architectures. These could be obtained through any combination of academic and professional experience
  • 8+ years of total software engineering experience across individual contributor and management roles
  • 4+ years of experience managing teams of 5+ people
  • 2+ years of experience managing other engineering managers
  • Experience working with projects managed using agile methods
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex domain concepts to colleagues and clients from other disciplines
  • Ability to collaborate with people at all levels and with multi-office/region teams

Other valuable experiences include:

  • Experience in engineering roles at a start-up or fast growing tech company with a strong track record of increasing mastery and responsibility
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks (ideally React) and technologies (HTML5/CSS./JavaScript)
  • Experience in architecting scalable software solutions
  • Experience with modern back-end languages and frameworks required (GraphQL, Python/Flask/Django or Node.js/Express preferred)
  • Mobile development experience (ideally React Native) preferred
  • Experience with modern browser technologies and cross-browser compatibility issues
  • Experience working with or providing services to enterprise customers (Fortune 500, Global 1000)
