    Bain’s Business Development (BD) team leads development of the Bain Alliance Ecosystem (BAE), a curated network of partnerships that helps Bain clients and teams get better results faster.  The BD team defines the firm’s repeatable model for partnership development and delivery, infusing the model with best practices distilled from all business development activity at Bain.  The BD team advises and supports partnership development and delivery by practice, solution and product teams.  The BD team leads development and delivery of strategic partnerships with potential to transform Bain’s offering across multiple practices, solutions and/or products.

     

    Position Summary

    The Director of Business Development, Planning and Program Management, is responsible for development and delivery of the firm’s strategic partnerships in the Planning and Program Management domain.  This person is an expert and thought leader in the domain, with deep understanding of planning and program management methods, technologies and tools and their deployment to solve our clients’ toughest problems.  This role guides our practice, solution and product leaders in the use of third party planning and program management capabilities to differentiate Bain’s offering and services.  This role guides our clients and teams in the use of planning and program management partnerships, as part of Bain’s solutions.  Last but not least, this role leads a team of business development resources dedicated to achieving full potential of Bain’s strategic partnerships in the planning and program management domain.  Success in this role is defined by (1) integration of relevant third party planning and program capabilities in Bain’s practices, solutions and products and (2) penetration of embedded third party planning and program capabilities in addressable Bain case work.  This individual should plan on 30-40% travel, including some international travel.

    Essential Functions
    • Demonstrate and develop expertise in planning and program management methods, technologies and tools and their deployment to solve our clients’ toughest problems
         o Create and maintain a point of view on innovations in the domain most likely to become relevant to Bain’s offering and capabilities
         o Develop Bain IP in the domain, in collaboration with Bain thought leaders, alliance partners and other external contributors
    • Guide our practice, solution and product leaders in the use of third party planning and program management capabilities to differentiate Bain’s offering and capabilities
         o Map third party planning and program management capabilities to Bain’s offering and capabilities
         o Identify, prioritize and realize differentiation opportunities
         o Become trusted advisor to practice, solution and product leaders where third party planning and program management capabilities are relevant, helping them develop and architect Bain’s offering
    • Guide our clients and teams in the use of planning and program management partnerships, as part of Bain’s solutions to their toughest problems
         o Understand and solve client business problems relevant to the domain
         o Advise and support client solution selling and delivery as a colleague of Bain partners and senior experts
         o Lead enablement of Bain teams deploying planning and program management partnerships
         o Direct activity of specialized planning and program management resources, as needed to ensure client and team success
         o Proactively identify and resolve issues encountered in joint selling and delivery
    • Lead a team of business development resources dedicated to achieving full potential of Bain’s strategic partnerships in the planning and program management domain
         o Create and maintain a view of the planning and program management ecosystem, including relevant data sources, tools, solutions and specialized services
         o Initiate, develop and scale portfolio of planning and program management partnerships required to deliver and sustain Bain solution and product development priorities, per Bain’s partnership development and delivery model
               Find the best prospective partners
               Test them in client work rapidly and rigorously
               Develop and negotiate partnership structures that create win-win-win’s for clients, Bain and alliance partners
               Establish and continuously improve repeatable, successful ways of working
               Define full potential and initiatives required to achieve it
               Establish and lead governance and management processes
               Manage risks associated with partnership portfolio, per Bain’s third party risk management policies and processes
         o Build network of promoters among Bain stakeholders and alliance partner executives
         o Become a role model as team leader and senior member of the broader business development community
              Inspire and lead by example
              Set team members up for success and sustainability, through clear objectives, situational leadership and regular performance feedback
              Cultivate effective collaboration and teamwork within the team and across the community
              Model and coach service orientation
         o Contribute to Bain’s repeatable model for partnership development and deployment

    Education Required
    •Bachelor’s degree
    Education Preferred
    •MBA
    Experience Required
    •15+ years of work experience
    •5-10 years working in a related domain (e.g., business development function, startup, product development/management)
    •At least 3 years of experience working in a professional services environment and/or collaborating with professional services firms
    Experience Preferred
    •Strategy consulting experience

    •Alliance management experience – experience in working with B2B partnerships

    •Creative negotiator – comfortable working with senior executives to identify compelling win/win business opportunities; able to manage risk/reward across new and evolving business initiatives
    •Exceptional communicator - excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to build excitement and support for new ideas and ways of working
    •Successful relationship manager - Able to understand diverse motivations and influences and identify ways to build win/win partnerships
         o Comfortable bringing multiple parties to a consensus solution
    •Strong collaborator - able to build internal consensus with Bain partners, practice and product leaders in a matrix structure
    •Team leader – able to inspire teams and drive joint results
