    The Consumer Products & Retail Practice Team is a global group that supports both the Consumer Products (CP) and Retail industry verticals. Along with being one of the flagship industry practices at Bain, this practice is recognized within the firm as a passionate, energetic and innovative team.





    Knowledge Specialists play a critical role in supporting Bain’s ability to deliver outstanding results for our clients. Candidates should have a strong interest in leading our end-to-end knowledge management processes, including knowledge capture operations, playing a leadership role in coordinating with other practices globally, and working closely with the Practice Team on practice strategy and operations, product development and other special projects. We are looking for a forward-thinking individual who has a desire to develop expertise within the consumer products and retail industries. Prior experience in these sectors is a plus (but not a requirement).


    This role is a full-time position supporting our Consumer Products & Retail practice areas in the Americas, sitting within a larger global Practice Team. Preferred location is Chicago. Other locations may be considered.




    Lead the capture and sharing of Bain’s knowledge base within the Americas Consumer Products & Retail industry verticals

    • Capture and process knowledge onto Bain’s global intranet platform from client development and case team efforts
      • Coordinate with other Knowledge Specialists to identify cross practice content priorities and identify gaps in the knowledge base
      • Communicate with case teams and practice affiliates to understand work and solicit most relevant content
      • Manage metadata to facilitate user searching
    • Package and codify Bain’s best thinking into insights, consistent with Bain’s confidentiality guidelines
    • Collaborate with practice team members to fill content gaps through new product development and deployment
    • Manage and maintain Practice page(s) on Bain’s intranet; ensure best materials are represented and shared


    Arm Partners and other members of the consulting staff with relevant expertise and resource recommendations

    • Provide value-added front-line support to case teams by sharing curated “best of” Bain content, experience and perspectives
    • Connect experts during case selling and serving situations
    • Support proposal development in select situations e.g. customized experience slides
    • Stay at the forefront of consumer products and retail industry innovations via external research, connecting with Bain experts, and coordinating with case teams
    • Help package additional industry insights, collaborating with our Information Services department, to enhance our knowledge base


    Contribute to the development and execution of the Americas Consumer Products & Retail practice strategy

    • Guide the development of the annual practice strategic plan and budget
    • Track and analyze underlying drivers of practice revenue growth
    • Support content planning and logistics for annual practice meetings
    • Drive practice affiliate communications, including preparation for experience sharing calls
    • Support Bain brand building efforts as needed (in coordination with Marketing)


    Actively contribute to the global Consumer Products & Retail practice and broader Product, Practice, & Knowledge team

    • Participate in (and sometimes lead) global team trainings, group projects, experience sharing, mentoring, and other initiatives
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement and innovation of global CP & Retail Practice processes and initiatives
    • Regularly communicate issues and progress to Practice Area leadership as required (including quality control of junior team member’s output)
    • Demonstrates flexibility with the changing demands of industry, the leadership team, commercial demand for varying products
    • Liaises with others as necessary, including members of other global services departments




    • BA, or equivalent undergraduate degree required with strong academic credentials
    • 5+ years of experience in a professional services firm environment, or in a Consumer Products or Retail company, with exposure to one or more of the following functional disciplines: knowledge management, consulting, marketing, research, finance, strategic planning, business development, product development, and/or project management; advanced degree or MLIS a plus
    • Interest in the Consumer Products & Retail sectors, coupled with some existing awareness of sector trends and players strongly preferred
    • Experience bringing innovative and ‘outside the box’ approaches to problem solving
    • Passion for business issues; ability to grasp complex business challenges as relevant to the Consumer Products & Retail sectors
    • Desire to work in a fast-paced and sometimes demanding professional environment, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities at one time
    • Attentive to detail and very organized, commitment to high-quality work
    • Intellectual curiosity and thirst for learning
    • Strong analytical and problem solving abilities
    • Ability to self-motivate and work autonomously, whilst appreciating guided coaching and collaborative teaming
