Overview

A new position within Bain’s Editorial Department, the Data Visualization Designer/Editor is responsible for creating arresting and compelling visuals, charts and other designs that convey Bain’s insights, data analysis and thought leadership across a variety of formats ranging from white papers to online articles to infographics and interactives. The Data Visualization Designer/Editor will support Bain’s Partners and practices by working with Practice Editors during content development to reimagine PowerPoint slides and other data output as visuals for publication and suggest and develop other visuals that display the key insights of the content. The Data Visualization Designer/Editor will work closely with designers on Bain’s Global Design team, Online Marketing team and Global Video team to ensure that designs are on-brand, consistent and work across all formats (online, print and, when appropriate, video).

The Data Visualization Designer/Editor must have a solid editorial understanding of—and intellectual curiosity about—the business topics in Bain’s publications, must be able to participate actively in conversations with Bain’s Partners and must be able to quickly convey design suggestions to those Partners both verbally and via mock-ups, sketches, PowerPoint slides and other appropriate means.

Responsibilities

  • Bain’s Practice Editors help our Partners distill and refine their business insights and analysis for publication. The Data Visualization Designer/Editor will play a role similar to that of Practice Editors, working with Partners and the Practice Editors to compose and publish key messages, but with a strong emphasis on visual formats.
  • Serve as an internal design consultant to Bain’s Practice Editors as they work with Bain’s Partners to publish Bain’s thought leadership insights in all formats:
    • Sit in on calls between Practice Editors and Partners to provide design guidance
    • Reimagine or rework PowerPoint slides provided by the practices to create compelling data graphics
    • Suggest new data visualization opportunities based on a close reading of the content
  • Conceive, develop and produce charts, infographics, interactives, “scrollytelling” (visual storytelling), online images and fulfill other editorial design imagery needs, as well as edit or improve images from other editorial designers.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau) used by Bain’s consulting teams; devote time to learning how these tools are used with clients and how they could be used in Bain’s various publication formats.
  • In collaboration with the Production Editors, manage the production flow of charts and other Editorial images, balancing deadlines and assignments against availability of in-house designers and complexity of project and stepping in as necessary to produce or update. images.
  • Learn and understand the Bain brand and all design requirements associated with the brand
  • Collaborate closely with Bain’s Creative Director (Global Design Department) and Senior Web Designer (Online Marketing Department) to ensure that:
    • All editorial content is visually consistent and on-brand
    • All new design ideas are quickly shared across the Marketing Department
  • In collaboration with the Senior Web Designer, develop and maintain a stable of talented freelance designers.
